NOTES

The Big Red Gravel Run is Quebec’s premier gravel ride that takes place every August near the town of Grenville in the Red River region about an hour and a half northwest of Montreal. I remember coming across these speed balls at about 40 kilometers into the event. I had stopped at the feed station looking for a fast fix. After popping a couple of these gems into my mouth and grabbing a few for the road I was good to go for another 100km. Quick and easy to make with no baking required, these energy balls will keep the bonk at bay!

YIELD

Servings: 12

COOK TIME / PREP TIME

15 minutes

INGREDIENTS

• 10 Medjool dates, pitted
• ½ cup raw pecans
• ½ cup raw walnuts
• ½ cup finely grated coconut, plus extra for coating
• ½ cup raw cacao powder
• 1 tsp cinnamon
• 1 pinch sea salt
• ⅛ cup maple syrup
• 1 tbsp maca powder2 tbsp chia seeds

METHOD

Put all the ingredients except for the maple syrup in a food processor. While the food processor is activated, slowly add the maple syrup. Continue mixing until well combined and forms a large chunk. Using your hands, roll the mixture into bite-size balls then roll in the coconut to coat. Store in an air tight container or ziplock to enjoy on the road. Enjoy!
